Washington Wizards Ready to Bet Big on Trae Young
The Wizards pulled off a surprise retooling by acquiring Trae Young and are widely expected to lock him up this summer. Marc Stein wrote, "I've been repeatedly advised to expect Young and the Wizards to come to terms on a contract extension this summer that is widely projected to be a three-year deal." Young is still rehabbing a sprained right knee and a quadriceps contusion and has not yet played for Washington. Adding Anthony Davis on top of Young signals the team is moving out of rebuild and trying to win now. Merlin sees the trade as a clear bet. Young holds a $49 million player option, so an extension buys continuity. Davis can sign a massive extension but carries injury risk, so Washington may wait on him. With a young core and a lottery pick, the Wizards are trading future flexibility for an immediate chase.
